Accessibility
The Australian Institute of Family Studies website has been designed following the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C) standards as far as possible - a set of global standards designed to make content available to everyone. We also follow the Australian Government Information Management Office's mandatory requirements for Australian Government agencies. These standards include aspects relating to access for people with disabilities.
If you need assistance because the information you need from our website is not available in a format you can access, please contact us.
Navigation
The primary navigation system on our website is a top menu with drop down sub-menus providing quick access to the site's major content areas. All areas of the website can also be accessed with Javascript and/or Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) disabled.
A "Skip to content" link is available at the top of each web page, allowing you to skip the primary navigation links and move directly to the main content area of the web page, which can improve accessibility when using screen readers or text-only browsers.
A search feature and site map are also provided, to allow you to find information on our website in the way you prefer.
Document types
All material on our website will be provided in HTML format where possible.
Some older publications are currently available as PDF, RTF or Word documents, or a combination of these formats. You can download the latest PDF reader free from the Adobe website.
Some technical documents such as databases are provided in alternative file formats where appropriate.
If you require an accessible version of any document that is not currently available in HTML please contact us.
Audio transcripts
We provide audio files of some of the AIFS seminar presentations from 2008 onwards, and occasionally other audio files. Where an audio file is available, transcripts of audio files are also made available. We aim to make a transcript available within a month of an audio file being published on our website.
Technical aspects
Our website is designed to allow scalable content to fit different screen resolutions, and will display in a wide range of browsers.
The text is scalable, allowing it to be resized in the browser window.
Links have meaningful link text which can be read by screen readers.
Images on this site have meaningful alternative "alt" tags which can be read by screen readers. Images which are decorative only are background images or have a blank ("null") "alt" tag.
